Apple Dumplings

These mouthwatering apple dumplings are irresistible!  For the crust you will need:

  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 3/4 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 6 apples, pared, cored, and cut in halves
  • Melted butter
  • Sugar and cinnamon

Preheat oven to 370°.

Sift flour, salt, and baking soda.  Add  butter.  Blend in milk.  Stir until flour is moistened.  Roll and cut in 5″ squares.  Place half an apple in each square.  Dot with melted butter and a little sugar and cinnamon.  Fold to seal apple.  Place in baking dish.

For the sauce:

  • 3 cups sugar
  • 3 cups water
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup butter

Combine sugar, water, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a pot.  Cook slowly over low heat for five minutes.  Add butter.  Pour sauce over dumplings and bake for 35 minutes.  Then enjoy this delicious treat!
